As The World Turns: Going to Extremes

Kerr Smith (Ryder) blows hot and cold about the 12-hour days he spend trapped at the bottom of a well. On the first day of taping, the well was filled with icy water, and Kerr froze. The next day, the cold water was gone – but it was even more awful. “The water was extremely hot,” groans Kerr. “Wardrobe had gotten me a wet suit, so I wound up wearing it, plus my regular clothes in that hot water, and I almost passed out.” The upside is it lent realism to the scenes in which Ryder is barely conscious. For Jordana Brewster (Nikki), the hardest part of those scenes was standing out in the rain. “It was torture,” she recalls. “I kept getting wet, then dry, then wet, then dry – again and again.” And Jordana’s dress wasn’t up to the challenge. “Once it got wet, it shrunk,” she says, “so the slip ended up longer than the dress.” Kerr blows hot and cold.
